MINGO AND
THE LEGACY
OF THE ESP

1893

Armais Sergeevich Arutunoff is born in Tiflis in the Russian Empire, to Armenian parents.

1894

The first oil-related electric pump patent is issued to Harry Pickett, using a downhole rotary electric motor with a plunger pump system.

1916

Arutunoff develops an early submersible electric motor and centrifugal pump for use in water wells, mines, and ships.

1918

Robert Newcomb receives a patent for an electro-magnetic engine designed to drive a reciprocating plunger pump, addressing failures in long

1923

Arutunoff immigrates to the United States but initially struggles to secure financial backing for his pump design.

1926

The first patent for a commercially operable electric submersible pump (ESP) is issued to Arutunoff, including the invention of the power cable use

1928

Bart Manufacturing is founded in Bartlesville, OK, and builds the first practical ESPs for oil wells.

1930s

Bart Manufacturing Company is renamed REDA Pump Company, representing “Russian Electrical Dynamo of Arutunoff.”

1930s

Arutunoff successfully demonstrates a working oilfield ESP, a self-contained unit capable of lifting oil from deep wells, replacing traditional mechanical lift systems.

1936

A Tulsa World article describes the ESP as a slim electric motor at the bottom of a well that “kicks oil to the surface.”

1938

Approximately two percent of U.S. oil production using artificial lift is powered by Arutunoff’s ESP technology.

Late 20th Century

REDA becomes the world’s largest manufacturer of ESP systems and is eventually acquired by Schlumberger.

1978

Armais Arutunoff passes away in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, leaving behind more than ninety U.S. patents and a lasting legacy in oil production technology.

2011–
2020

Industry undergoes major consolidation with acquisitions by GE, Halliburton, Dover, and ChampionX, reshaping the ESP landscape.

2024

NOV acquires Extract, continuing the wave of integration across ESP technology and services.
